Lompoc Valley Medical Center (LVMC) was looking to expand its primary care and specialty offerings but had no established building space to do so. At this same time, Sansum Multi-Specialty Clinic made a business decision to close its clinic, threatening local access to primary care for thousands of patients.
LVMC coordinated the purchase of Sansum Multi-Specialty Clinic and renamed it Lompoc Health – North H Center. In addition to maintaining a large-scale medical practice in the rural community, the establishment of an Urgent Care at the facility was projected to provide a significant reduction in Emergency Department overcrowding. Additionally, LVMC would now have access to several million dollars annually from MRI/CT/PT/Lab services that otherwise would occur elsewhere. The new facility would also provide thousands of local residents the ability to establish with a Primary Care Provider, regardless of insurance status.
After only a one-day closure for transition, residents of the Lompoc Valley retained access to a major source of healthcare. The purchase enabled retention of 45 jobs, as well as the creation of eight new positions. The clinic expanded its provider offerings from 9.92 to 13.53 FTEs and an anticipated stable level of 19.8. Urgent Care is newly available for 12 hours each weekday, with seven-day coverage in the spring of 2019. A laboratory and draw station were re-integrated into the clinic and there are plans to add major service lines, including bariatric surgery, wound care, dermatology, allergy and immunology.
