The data and technology revolution has opened up a significant opportunity for innovation and advancement in many sectors including healthcare. One area of advancement that is ripe with possibilities is the ability to adapt intelligent automation into your processes. For many healthcare organizations, it may seem like a daunting (and expensive) undertaking. But you may be surprised to learn that automation initiatives can be undertaken and completed in a relatively short period of time at an investment level lower than you would probably assume. In this two-part blog post, we’ll explain:

  • What is Robotic Process Automation (RPA)?
  • How is Intelligent Automation transforming healthcare?
  • What value it can bring to ASCs.
  • How automation can help ease COVID-19 challenges.
  • Automation use cases for administrative functions, supply chain and revenue cycle.
  • Emerging technologies – like chatbots that learn as they process additional information – that can create a virtual workforce.

What is RPA?

Simply put, RPA software robots are used to automate recurring, often mundane tasks and free your team members to perform higher value work and analysis. Robotic process automation runs applications in the same way that a person works with that software. It automates high volume, lower complexity processes that are prone to human error, replacing those repetitive tasks performed by team members with a virtual workforce.

An important differentiator of RPA is that it is non-invasive and can be overlaid on existing systems without modifying the application’s code. It’s often used in areas where there is friction – an application doesn’t complete a process or there are other manual tasks required to complete (in Excel, via email, another application, etc.).

How is Intelligent Automation Transforming Healthcare?

Providers are already benefiting from investments in automation, with 92% of healthcare leaders stating they currently use technology to automate business processes. RPA adoption continues at a rapid pace with Gartner projecting 50% growth over the next 3 years (Gartner, May 2020). Respondents to a recent survey said they see high growth potential in automating high-volume, repetitive tasks in supply chain management, revenue cycle management, finance and human resources.

It’s not only for large hospitals and IDNs. Critical Access Hospitals have used it for projects around supply chain management such as auto replenishment. An integrated health system with a focus around patients with disabilities and chronic illnesses used automation to bring efficiency to their processes around denials management, patient pre-registration and bed management. A surgery center automated its processes around bundled payment management.

In our next post, we’ll review the specific value that automation can bring to ASCs, including several use cases, and explore the next frontier of intelligent automation – natural language chatbots.
